Remodel Your Bathroom
Posted on October 13th, 2009
So I'm ready for my bathroom remodel. Where should I start?
The first step should be to create a budget. To set up your budget, you should investigate the recent cost of a few of the changes and transformations you would like to make in your bathroom. Next, you must choose what you want to keep and what you want to get rid of. The first items a homeowner should put away are outdated fixtures, horrific tiles, and clumsy countertops.
Once you have decided on the general layout, the color on the walls, the tiles, and on the bathroom fixtures, it's time to begin your remodel. While this may appear like a labor intensive undertaking, in the end you'll have a bathroom that meets all your needs. If you intend to do major renovation work, try to hire a designer and a general contractor. The needs for electricity and lights has changed significantly as years have passed, so you might want to hire an electrician once you have stripped everything down so they can rewire the room.
Does the city require permits?
If you are building an addition to your property or are doing structural work, you will probably need special permits. But these are only necessary for working inside city limits. The smartest thing to do is to take a look into your area's building codes. If you use a local general contractor, they can tell you if you need to get permits or not. Be sure to get a permit if it's necessary. You definitely do not want to have your bathroom reconstruct project shut down completely or to be subject to fines and to even higher insurance premiums should it not meet code.
Which paint should I use on the walls?
The primary mistake people make is to use flat wall paint in lieu of a semi-gloss. First, it's hard to scrub flat paint so it looks clean. Grime and dirt can often gather around doors and the wall areas near light switches. Flat wall paint also deteriorate faster after cleaning. Another issue is the lighting. There is more reflection if you use semi-gloss wall paint. If you really want the look of flat paint, use satin paint as it provides the durability of semi-gloss with the color and texture of flat paint.
Do I have to buy all new components?
Absolutely not! Don't let anyone tell you that you have to replace all the hardware, fixtures, or even the amenities. You should keep your recessed bathtub if you are really attached to it. The bottom line is: it's your bathroom and your money, so, you decide. Flea markets and wholesale outlets are a good source for sinks, toilets, and bathroom fixtures. A recycling group is another choice. Leftover building materials or amenities can be found on online recycling groups.
Will my house worth more if I renovate my bathroom?
A home's value will increase with a modern and recently remodeled bathroom. A modern bathroom is a key point for most home buyers. Everybody passes a fair amount of time in the bathroom for one purpose or another. So it is completely logical to want to make this area welcoming and comfortable.
What would help me not get crazy during remodel work?
If you're attempting to reconstruct your bathroom, the best advice is to be sure you have all the facts in your reach before you start ripping down walls and removing old tile. If you don't know what you are doing, then a remodel can, and will, get out of control quickly. You've heard the proverb "measure twice and cut once", well it should read: "measure twice and then call a professional for advice." Don't rush. It pays to take your time and to get help and advice from friends and family who may have done a bathroom remodel already. It's fascinating how many skills and jobs are needed for such a tiny area. If you need remodel ideas, logging into home improvement web sites is a great tool.

November 6th, 2009 at 2:26 pmRemodeling your bathroom is the best thing you can do if you are trying to sell your home. When a person comes to look at your home to buy, the three things they look for is the bedroom sizes, kitchen condition and condition of bathrooms. Most people do not want to fix up a home.

November 7th, 2009 at 1:20 amYour description of the different styles of bathroom remodeling are perfect. I’ve always leaned more towards different styles, feeling that the modern ones are too exotic for my taste. It was nice to see you hitting on the differences so well.

November 20th, 2009 at 3:08 amI must disagree with bill, remodeling is a great thing to do if your trying to sell, but its definately not the best! The best thing to sell a house, is home staging. Home staging can make your house look like its worth twice as much as it currentl does.
I love the video, i like the budget point. Very important factor that most people miss!
Hope all goes well!

January 24th, 2010 at 3:18 pmWow, it’s pretty rare to see someone put things into perspective the way you just did. I wish that other bloggers and people that post content to the web would take a page from your book! Do you have any other sites that I could visit or could you possibly make a recommendation as to where I might be able to find some more information? Either way, thanks for an excellent resource and I look forward to being a repeat reader!

January 24th, 2010 at 6:10 pmI’d suggest you do a Google(Remodel Your Bathroom + wordpress + “Top Commenters”) search, but I think I’m the only one presenting the whole industry at this time. I think eBay banned me but I will post other sources as soon as I get the time to do so. Stay tuned, bathrooms are the most expensive room in every house and consequently they are a real gold mine.

Dan from Illuminated Bathroom Mirror Says:
February 6th, 2010 at 3:26 pmI would like to suggest that anyone planning a bathroom remodel also consider the benefits of eco-friendly bathroom design in their project. The American Water Works Association has produced some remarkable stats re average bathroom water usage per person per day, and the savings that can be had from installing a low flush toilet and low flow shower head. And as well as bringing environmental benefits, this may translate into reduced fuel bills for some homeowners in the long run.
